How Does Heat
Treatment Work?

The use of high heat to exterminate bed bugs is the most effective way to kill the bugs and eggs.  They cannot survive exposure to high heat.  We raise the heat to  122 degrees Fahrenheit using a combination of heat and high-powered fans to  circulate the hot air creating  a convected heat.  The process is similar to how a dryer works.  The air flow enables the heat to penetrate deep into all the areas bed bugs hide.   This includes;  furniture, clothing, items, and even inside wall voids where the bugs or eggs can be.  Our technicians take multiple temperature readings every 15-minutes throughout the entire day to ensure to the best of their ability that no cold spots exist where bugs can survive. The combination of heat, airflow and active monitoring provides the best results for our clients and we strive to get the heat into everything and everywhere to ensure not a single bug or egg survives.

How Effective Are Heat Treatments?

Heat treatments are the most effective and efficient solution to treat a bed bug infestation.  It works best because bed bugs hide in numerous items and areas, and not just in the box-spring or on the bed. They can hide in wall voids too and the heat works because it absorbs into everything and everywhere. Our heat treatments also provide a very high success rate on 98% of jobs in a single visit. The heat also kills all stages of bed bugs, from eggs to nymphs to adults, in just a few hours penetrating every corner of the treatment area,  to ensure a thorough and complete extermination.

How Do You Prepare for a Heat Treatment?

Heat treatments require minimal preparation in most situations to prepare for a treatment.  There is usually no need to wash and dry your clothing or dispose of infested furniture. There are occasions though where you may need to reduce clutter to ensure the heat penetrates properly and you will need to remove heat sensitive items such as candles, crayons,  lipstick or flammable items.  You will be provided instructions on how to prepare your home.

Benefits of Heat Treatment

Though there are many benefits to heat treatment, here are a few of the main advantages:

  • Heat is the most effective treatment killing bugs wherever they are hiding
  • Heat kills bed bugs at all life stages regardless of where they are hiding
  • Heat kills eggs
  • Heat treatments can be completed in a single day

How Much Do Heat Treatments Cost?

When it comes to heat treatments, there is no "one size fits all" pricing structure. Due to the fact we use bed bug detection dogs to pinpoint infested rooms there are occasions where we may not have to heat the entire home.  Several factors are taken into consideration when pricing your heat treatment, such as the size, structure,  age, accessibility or your home and the amount of clutter.

How Long Does it Take?

Heat treatments take between 6-10 hours to complete.   Our crew arrives in the morning and are usually done by early evening.  Of course, there are scenarios that may require additional time.  Factors that can affect the length of the job include the size of the building or home, how the building or home is constructed, how much insulation was used during the construction, and whether or not the home has a fully finished basement with a concrete floor.

How Long Do Pesticide Treatments Take in Comparison?

Pesticide treatments cannot solve an infestation in a single visit, because they do not kill eggs.  They typically require 3-4 treatments depending on the level of the infestation. We only recommend using them if the infestation is small and has not spread into multiple rooms or floors in a home.  If that has occurred using heat is far more effective as it can take 5-7 treatments using pesticides alone if the infestation is larger and that frustrates clients.  Chemical treatments can also  require more preparation, such as washing drying clothes, bagging items and disposing of infested furniture and unfortunately even with careful preparation and correct application,  the infestation can require more treatments than the technician anticipates it will. This is because there is no way to know for certain where every bug or egg is hiding since they hide where they cannot be seen inside cracks and crevices and all of them have to be killed too.   Pesticide resistance is also a problem.  Some bedbugs are too resistant to kill with pesticides alone.
